World Renowned Shanghai Children’s Palace Art Troupe to Perform in Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii – Shanghai Children’s Palace Art Troupe, an internationally recognized youth performing arts group that has performed at the White House as well as opening ceremonies for the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be in Hawaii for a one-time only performance on Friday, August 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Shanghai Children’s Palace Art Troupe includes 45 multi-talented youngsters, ages 10 to 17, who perform a dazzling array of Chinese choral works, dances (folk, modern and ballet), Chinese instruments and Beijing Opera. The Shanghai Children’s Palace provides a place for China’s most gifted youngsters to pursue their interests and further develop their skills in the arts, science, literature, dance and gymnastics.

The performance is being presented by Hawaii National Bank and U.S. China People’s Friendship Association, supported by the Hawaii Heritage Center, Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Center for Chinese Studies, Confucius Institute UHm, Hawaii Foundation of Chinese Cultural and Art, and Dr. Sun Yat-sen Hawaii Foundation.

A portion of net proceeds will be donated to Child and Family Service to support their child abuse prevention and domestic violence programs.

According to Shanghai Children’s Palace Art Troupe General Chairman Walter T.C. Chang, Shanghai Children’s Palace Art Troupe last performed in Hawaii nearly 10 years ago, and this year’s performance will be a multi-cultural event that will also include Olana Ai Hula Halau.

“The troupe’s visit is part of a cultural exchange program headed by Honorary Chairs Governor Linda Lingle and Walter Chee Kwon Chun,” Chang said. “In addition to the performance, the troupe will visit Hawaii’s visitor attractions such as Pearl Harbor and the Polynesian Cultural Center, and entertain at the Children’s Discovery Center as well.”

The troupe’s 65-member delegation is led by the Honorable Mr. Lu Ping, Chairman of the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation. Shanghai Children’s Palace Art Troupe was formed in 1955 by the China Welfare Institute under the direction of Madame Soong Ching Ling, wife of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

The troupe has performed throughout the world, establishing cultural exchanges with children of other countries and furthering international goodwill, friendship and understanding.

Sun Yat-sen Hawaii Foundation presents Lifetime Achievement Award

December 14th, 2009

Sun Yat-sen Chairman Warren Luke, along with President Steven Ai presented the Foundation's first Lifetime Achievement Award to Walter Chee Kwon Chun and his wife Sau Chun Wong Chun for their efforts to improve the quality of life, and the understanding of people from both China and the United States of America.

Both were born in Hawaii, but spent the majority of their adult lives helping the people of China improve their lives and to guide the country into the modern era. Their work also helped open the door to the West, and paved the way for improving trade and relations between the two countries.
